Hamilton wins Hungarian GP


Lewis Hamilton ended weeks of expectation and frustration when he finally won his first race for Mercedes by claiming a dominant text-book triumph in the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The 28-year-old Briton led from pole position to the chequered flag, apart from three short spells for pit-stops, as he secured his fourth victory in sweltering conditions.

Hamilton came home 11 seconds clear of Finn Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus and third-placed defending triple world champion German Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull, who was unable to force his way into second place in the closing laps.

Hamilton's pole was his third in successive races but the previous two had seen him unable to exploit the advantage - a spectacular tyre failure at Silverstone wrecking his hopes while leading the British Grand Prix.
But this time, in Mercedes' 350th race as engine suppliers in Formula One, he enjoyed some of the luck that had been missing elsewhere to mark his 120th Grand Prix with a well-taken win.

Aston Martin sign major deal with Mercedes

 
Aston Martin is to team up with Mercedes to develop a new generation of engines and components.
 
As part of the deal, Mercedes owner Daimler will take a stake of up to 5% in the UK luxury auto maker.
It is hoped the partnership will allow Aston Martin to compete more effectively with Volkswagen's Bentley and Tata Motors' Jaguar Land Rover.

100-year old Aston Martin makes the V8 Vantage, DB9 and Vanquish sports cars.
The companies did not release any financial details of the deal, which they aim to complete by the end of the year.

Aston Martin has been struggling of late. In the nine months to the end of September last year it sold 2,340 cars, a 19% drop on the same period in 2011.

Mercedes CLA 45 AMG


The new Mercedes CLA 45 AMG has made its virtual debut at the launch of the Playstation 4.

The Mercedes CLA 45 AMG has had its virtual unveiling as one of the stars in the new Driveclub game, set to be released on the Playstation 4.

The single rear shot reveals that it gets a similar look to standard CLA in the AMG Sport trim level, with large rear exhausts and intakes either side of the bumper.

The CLA is based on the same platform as the Mercedes A-Class hatch and will get the same 2.0-litre turbocharged engine as the A45 AMG. The 355bhp unit will work in conjunction with a four-wheel-drive system to launch the CLA 45 AMG from 0-62mph in just under five seconds. 
 
Both this car and the A 45 AMG will be presented to the world in March (A 45 at Geneva, CLA 45 at New York).

2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT

 

The introduction of the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT effectively announces the ouster of previous versions of the SLS AMG.
The vehicle is equipped with the same 6.2-liter V8 from the current SLS model, but delivers an additional 20 horsepower at 583. Torque remains consistent at 479 pound-feet, and the same seven-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch gearbox is carried over. The GT’s maximum speed is still electronically limited to 197 mph, while the 0 to 60 acceleration time yields 3.6 seconds. Enhancements are also found on the car’s adaptive performance suspension, resulting in stiffer springs and dampers that are more aggressively tuned. Interior upgrades include the new optional Designo style package, offered in three different color combinations and featuring the finest leather upholstery with contrast stitching and diamond quilt patterns on the seats and doors.
The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT will hit dealer showrooms starting in November.

Mercedes Concept Style Coupe unveiled

Here’s another car to be unveiled at next week’s Beijing Motor Show, and another one that is going to become reality. Mercedes is calling this the CSC or ‘Concept Style Coupe’,  but you should call it CLA as that’s what it will likely be badged when you see it in your local showroom next year, or early the year after.

A little longer than a current C-class and a lot more sexy, this is the third variant on the new A-class (the first being the new B-class, which of course was launched before the A in Mercedes’ slightly dyslexic new model programme). All three cars share what Benz calls the ‘MFA’ structure for ‘medium front-drive architecture.

The CSC will roll onto the stage in China powered by a 208-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that also sees duty in the new A-Class hatchback. Like the A-Class five-door that debuted in Geneva, the CSC is expected to ride atop Mercedes' new MFA platform.

We're also expecting Mercedes to unveil a related concept in North America very shortly at the Transmission LA: AV Club music and media festival that begins in LA on April 20, so keep your eyes peeled for that vehicle as well.

Rosberg wins F1 2012 Chinese GP


Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg won the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday for his first career Formula One victory after starting from pole.

Rosberg won by a massive 20.6 seconds over McLaren’s Jenson Button after making just two pits stops and managing to hold off the rest of the field on worn tires.

Button’s McLaren teammate Lewis Hamilton was third, followed by Red Bull duo Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, who were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Defending champion Vettel started 11th on the grid and at one stage moved up to second, but couldn’t hold off Button, Hamilton and Webber in the closing stages.

Rosberg’s teammate, seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, had started second, but retired from the race on lap 13 after his right front wheel wasn't fitted properly during his first pit stop.

McLaren leads the constructor standings with 88 points, followed by Red Bull in second with 64 and Ferrari on 37.

Geneva 2012: new Mercedes A-Class

Staying close to the stunning design of the Concept A-Class seen at the Shanghai motor show last year, the new car apparently sits 18cm closer to the ground than its dowdy predecessor. That bold face and sweeping lines lend it a very aggressive, coupe-ish feel, and Merc has promised us a "high-quality" interior to match.

The new A-Class will get two petrol engines - a 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre - producing 115bhp, 156bhp and 211bhp, the latter badged as A 250. The 1.6-litre four-pot will also debut Merc's new ‘Camtronic' system, which adjusts the valve lift on the intake side to restrict the amount of fresh mixture used under partial load.
The diesel engines come in the shape of the A 180 producing 109bhp, the A 200 with 136bhp and the 2.2-litre A 220 with 170bhp and 258lb ft of torque. All engines come with start/stop as standard, and you can opt for a six-speed manual or Merc's 7G-DCT dual-clutch auto.

More details and trim levels to follow closer to its launch date, but here's one more thing to nibble on.

Vettel Wins Indian Grand Prix


Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel won the inaugural Formula One Indian Grand Prix on Sunday, staying on track to equal the record for the number of wins in a season.

Vettel led from start to finish, maintaining a comfortable buffer throughout to finish 8.4 seconds ahead of McLaren's Jenson Button, with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso a distant third.
The race saw yet another collision between McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari's Felipe Massa to intensify their rivalry, with Massa in the wrong and given a pit drive-through penalty before later breaking his front suspension and retiring from the race.
Red Bull's Mark Webber was fourth, ahead of the Mercedes pair of Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg.
